Things to Remember…
The purpose of this poll is to gauge public sentiment – at the conceptual stage of the discussion – regarding the lighting of the New River Gorge Bridge near Fayetteville, West Virginia.
The idea of lighting the bridge is in the early concept stage. The images and animations shown here do not represent an implementation proposal. Rather, these images are an artist’s rendering of the idea; final results are expected to vary should the concept move forward into project development.
Engineering design work has not been performed, nor has it been scheduled. This means that design plans have not been prepared to implement this concept. Likewise, the review of potential environmental concerns and the scheduling of public workshops have not been performed to date. These are all tasks that will be accomplished in the future should this concept move forward into the project development stage.
As currently imagined, the lighting would be fully automated and operated for a limited time each night; the lights would not be “on” for the entire night. The daily schedule would be based on the time of sunset. The lights could be operated seasonally based on environmental factors, and they could be automatically preempted and turned off due to heavy fog or other weather conditions.
As currently imagined, the lights could be programmed with brief startup animations with varying movements, color, and intensity; however, the startup animations would come to rest on a static scheme for the remainder of the evening. The static scheme could include variable color schemes; the colors could tastefully change from time to time during the course of the evening.
As currently imagined, opening would ideally be scheduled to coincide with a statewide celebration of our State’s sesquicentennial birthday on June 20, 2013.
Preliminary cost projections range from $4 to $6 million dollars. Funding sources have not been identified. Should the concept move forward, public-private-partnerships will be explored.
