Airports
Airports are a vital key to our transportation system. From private to commercial and passenger to air cargo, West Virginia's airports play a significant role in the state's economy and the communities they serve. These airports are also located close to other intermodal forms of transportation, thereby allowing greater access and competitive transportation opportunities to businesses and individuals.
West Virginia remains truly committed to developing and improving airport facilities to ensure that our transportation system meets the current and future air transportation needs and demands.
Aeronautics Commission
The West Virginia Aeronautics Commission (WVAC) fosters and assists in the development of aeronautics in West Virginia and encourages the establishment of airports and air navigation facilities.
Airport Improvement Grant Program
The West Virginia Aeronautics Commission administers a grant program to encourage and support needed capital improvements to the state's public airports. Airports meeting the criteria for Federal Aviation Administration Airport Improvement Program funds also qualify for funding from the state program.
Currently, airports that meet the Aeronautics Commission's criteria can qualify for up to half of the local share required to match FAA funds. The grant program is supported by the state tax on aircraft fuel and general revenue funds.
