Driver's Licenses
All types of instruction permits and driver's licenses may be obtained at most of the DMV Regional Offices.
**Please note: If the motor vehicle you want to take the driver's skills examination in is under a safety recall, Regional Office personnel will not give the examination. If a customer wishes to be examined in a vehicle under a known safety recall, the owner or operator must provide proof that the issue has been properly repaired and resolved prior to being allowed to use that vehicle for the examination.
You will be provided with the opportunity to obtain another vehicle not under any safety recall to proceed with the skills test provided it is still on the same day of requested testing.
For complete information about obtaining and renewing a driver's license, see the fact sheet, Driver's License Information.
**Please note: Due to increased security and information requirements for the REAL ID Act of 2005, all new driver's licenses, license renewals, and ID cards must now have the applicant's full legal name. If your current driver's license has your middle initial only, you will need to bring a certified birth certificate or passport with you to DMV the next time you renew your license so the change can be made. If you have a different name than what is listed on your birth certificate, due to marriage or other circumstances, you may need to bring additional documentation, which may include a certified marriage certificate.
If you choose to have your full name put on your license before your renewal notice has been sent in the mail, DMV will not charge you for the cost of the new license.
To obtain a birth certificate, if you were born in West Virginia, contact the West Virginia Department of Health & Human Resources. If you were born in another state, the National Center for Health Statistics has information on how to obtain a birth certificate.
