DMV Continues Phase-In of the Electronic Insurance Verification Process • NAIC Number on Forms Not Required At This Time

2/10/2011

CHARLESTON, W.Va.
-Customers at the Division of Motor Vehicles (DMV) will start to see a new field on some of the forms DMV processes, specifically those used for the vehicle titling and registration process.  As part of legislation passed last year regarding the electronic verification of insurance, a National Association of Insurance Commissioners (NAIC) number will soon be required when titling or registering a vehicle.  These numbers will be used to identify each vehicle insurance company.

This information is not required now. However, as forms are re-ordered, the space for the five digit NAIC number will be included.

The electronic insurance verification process is completed by matching the insurance policy number and the vehicle identification number (VIN) to the insurance company through the NAIC number.  Currently, not all insurance companies provide their customers with the NAIC number, but will in the future.  DMV is now processing all vehicle title and registration transactions with or without the NAIC number.
