Project Description
The Clarksburg Street Bridge was built in 1926 by Shaid Contracting Company and designed by Concrete Steel Engineering Company. The bridge is a 3 span concrete T-beam supported by concrete abutments and piers and the parapets are concrete railing supported by concrete balusters. The overall length is 114’3” and is 34’4” inches wide and is a two lane structure posted for 11 tons. There are two sidewalks, each supported by a T-beam. The bridge is a contributing structure within the Mannington Historical District and is listed on the National Register of Historic Places.

The existing bridge provides access in the City of Mannington. Although Mannington is a city, it is not an urban area and Clarksburg Street is considered a rural road.

Clarksburg Street Bridge

Purpose and Need

The purpose of the project is to replace the Clarksburg Street Bridge in Mannington, Marion County. The bridge is located approximately 0.04 miles south of County Route 1, and is owned by the City of Mannington and carries Clarksburg Street over Buffalo Creek. By agreement with the city, the WVDOH inspects the bridge. The new bridge will meet current design standards including suitable weight limits to efficiently serve the residential, commercial and business community.

Construction Schedule
The bridge is currently scheduled for construction in the spring of 2013.

Alternatives
  • Alternative One- Replaces the bridge at its current location, while using existing routes to detour traffic during construction. Alternative One proposes a new three span bridge estimated to be 125’ in length, having a 24’ clear width with 20’ approach slabs located at each end of the bridge. The new bridge will include two 5’ sidewalks. Total cost of construction is $2,810,000.
  • Alternative Two (Preferred Alternative)- Replaces the bridge at its current location, while using existing routes to detour traffic during construction. Alternative Two proposes a new single span bridge estimated to be 120’ in length, having a 24’ clear width with 20’ approach slabs located at each end of the bridge. The new bridge will include two 5’ sidewalks. Total cost of construction is $2,417,000.
  • Alternative Three Alternative Three evaluates renovating the existing structure. A renovation assessment was completed by the WVDOH. Based on the preliminary assessment of this structure it appears that the existing bridge cannot be renovated at any cost. No structural members appear to be salvageable and all new materials will have to be used in a replacement. Therefore, renovating the existing structure is not feasible and no cost estimate was done.
  • No-Build Option- No-Build Alternative will eventually result in the permanent closure of the bridge to traffic.
