The WVDOH and Maryland State Highway Administration, along with the Federal Highway Administration have cooperated in the development of a Tier I Environmental Impact Statement
to study corridors for improving capacity and operational safety of the US 220 National Highway System between Appalachian Corridor H in WV and I-68 in Maryland.
This Tier I study analyzed preliminary corridors recommended as a result of the recent North South Appalachian Corridor Feasibility study completed under the co-sponsorship
of Maryland, Pennsylvania, Virginia, and West Virginia departments of transportation.
The Federal Highway Administration approved the Tier One Final EIS on April 4, 2014. The WVDOH and Maryland State Highway Administration, along with the Federal Highway
Administration solicited comments on the Final EIS until May 19, 2014.
Approval of the Tier One Record of Decision (ROD) occurred on July 21, 2014. The Tier Two work will occur after the ROD; however a schedule has not been developed.
The preferred corridor will then be further refined in a future Tier II NEPA study, which will culminate in a selected alternative to address the traffic needs for the area.
