Environmental Planning

The Environmental Planning Unit is responsible for performing the environmental review for the Grant Administration Unit projects.  The review consists of performing a comprehensive environmental review of the grant projects, including consultation with the US Fish & Wildlife Service, the West Virginia Division of Natural Resources, the West Virginia State Historic Preservation Office and other applicable regulatory and natural resource agencies.  The grant projects’ reviews are performed in accordance with the National Environmental Policy Act (NEPA), and approved by the Federal Highway Administration.  The Unit is also responsible for Planning-Environmental Linkage (PEL) activities for traditional highway projects.  This work may involve preliminary environmental data gathering during the planning stages of a project, natural resource agency consultation, and coordination with the state’s Metropolitan Planning Organizations and with the WVDOH Environmental Section.  Additionally, the Environmental Planning Unit manages and coordinates informational public workshops for planning-level highway studies.
